Act 3
Scene 1:
1. What do Rosencrantz and Guildenstern report to Polonius?
That he is not totally crazy just upset about something and its probably not Ophelia.
2. How does Claudius react when Polonius says, "…with devotion's visage, And pious action we do sugar o'er/ The devil himself"?
It makes him think about the wrong he has done in killing his brother.
3. What plan do Polonius, Claudius and Ophelia now put into action?
Ophelia talks to Hamlet "alone" but really Claudius and Polonius are spying on them to see if Hamlet has gone crazy for Ophelia's love.
4. What is the nature of Hamlet's soliloquy, lines 57-91?
He says whether or not to take action or to not, because he is going up against the king if he does that he will have a death sentence if he gets caught.
5. What is Hamlet's main argument against suicide?
That he doesn't know about the after life suicide is self murder in the Bible Exodus 20:13 "thou shall not murder," so if he does commit suicide he will go to hell.
6. Why does Hamlet treat Ophelia as cruelly as he does? What has changed him?
He treats her so cruelly because she tried to give back the love letter he wrote to her, so she betrayed him, once he figures out that he is in a trap.
7. What thinly veiled threat to Claudius does Hamlet voice, after he becomes of his hidden presence? (lines 148-150)
He says he is going to kill him and not his mother.
8. At the end of this scene, what does the King decide to do with Hamlet?
To send him away to england to make sure he can't ruin any part of his plan.
Scene 2:
9. What qualities in Horatio cause Hamlet to enlist his assistance?
Horatio is Hamlet's closest and most trust-worthy friend, he keeps his word with Hamlet and does not betray him.
10. What does Hamlet ask Horatio to do?
He wants him to spy on Claudius and see what he does during the play, to see if he feels bad or neglectful about the murder.
11. Summarize what happens in the play-within-a-play.
Hamlet sets up the play as a trap to see what Claudius did, and a play is going on the whole time... during that time Hamlet talks to everyone and makes fun of them.
12. Why, in line 233, does Hamlet refer to the play-within-a-play as "The Mouse-trap"?
Because he is trapping the King to see his reaction of the play because it is mostly like Hamlets story, on how Old Hamlet died.
13. What is the King's reaction to the play?
He leaves because now he thinks that Hamlet knows that he killed his brother and married his wife.
14. In lines 354-363, to what object does Hamlet compare himself? Why?
A flute and Guildenstern played him, but now Hamlet is to smart and can't be played anymore.
15. As Hamlet goes to his mother at the end of this scene, what does he admonish himself to do?
Hamlet doesn't want to kill his mother because its his only parent and just wants to hurt her with his words.
