Hamlet ?s 1.3,4

1) What is Laertes advice to Ophelia?
To not have emotions towards Hamlet and for her not to lose her virginity to him because thats all she has right now.
2) How does “The canker galls the infants of the spring/ too oft before their buttons be disclos’d” fit into the ideology of the decaying garden?
Because its comparing Hamlet to a worm inside a garden that is dying.
3) What analogy does Ophelia give to her brother as an answer to his advice? What does she mean?
She tells Laertes to listen to himself first before giving advice because he is probably following lust when he is in France.
4) List five of the “few precepts” that Polonius gives to Laertes.
Think before you act, no vulgarity, dress nice but not to nice, don't borrow or lend money, and to listen more then just talk.
5) In lines 105-109, what is the metaphor that Polonius uses to describe Hamlet’s words of love?
Tender, he says that she is believing all of what Hamlet says, and Polonius tells her that she is like a baby and doesn't know what she is doing as if she can't think on her own, but he is just trying to use her for her innocence or her virginity.
6) List and explain one metaphor found in the lines 115-135.
Ophelia is considered a bug and Hamlet is a light, and bugs, go to light but the light will kill her not warm her heart is was Polonius says.
7) What is Polonius’ command to Ophelia?
To not go talk or be with Hamlet at all because he wants to control her and sell her virginity for power.
8) In scene 4, what is Hamlet talking about in lines 13-38?
He hates that the new king keeps getting drunk and firing the cannons because the other countries now look at them as if there a bunch of drunk fools.
9) Why doesn’t Horatio want Hamlet to follow the ghost?
Because he thinks the ghost will cause him insanity or have him commit suicide someway.
10) What is Hamlet’s command to the three guards?

To not follow him and the ghost because the ghost only wants to speak with Hamlet.
